Upcoming: Edition 2, September 9th 2011

On Friday 9th September 2011 Edition 2 of the Magazine section of Egyptological will be published.  The second edition of the Journal will be published at the end of the month, with details to follow.

With five articles in the Magazine Articles section, a book review in Magazine Reviews and a new Photo Album in Colloquy we hope that you will enjoy the latest publication.  If you have comments or queries about the articles you can reply to any of them to start a discussion by clicking “Post Comment” at the end of each article.

In the Magazine Brian Alm has written the second part of his series looking at Ancient Egyptian religion. In Ancient Egyptian Religion, Part 2: Concepts of Creation, God, and Eternity he looks at the creation myths in the four centres of Egyptian theology before going on to look at concepts of resurrection and eternity.  Philip A. Femano’s article Granite Plugs in the Great Pyramid questions and discusses the traditional idea that the granite plugs set into corridors within the pyramid were security mechanisms to prevent robbers from finding their way into the royal tomb.  Barbara O’Neill follows her overview of the Ancient Egyptian mirror, with Eternal Companions – The Creatures Who Could Speak to God in which she investigates some of the key elements which make up offering table scenes within Egyptian tombs, and discusses the significance of the presence of small dogs, lively monkeys, or elegant cats under the chairs of tomb owners in those scenes.  In his article In Defense of Belzoni Garry Beuk looks at the life and work of early explorer Giovanni Belzoni, suggesting that his reputation as an irresponsible treasure hunter was often undeserved.  Finally, the article Libyan Desert Glass and the Breast Ornament of Tutankhamen investigates the green translucent scarab at the heart of one of Tutankhamen’s most elaborate ornaments.

The  Magazine Reviews section will carry a review of the book The Lost Tombs of Saqqara.

In Colloquy both the Photo Album and In Brief sections are updated on an ad hoc basis, so if you have a photo album, short review or article that you would like to add, see our Contribute Photos and Write for Us pages.  Send your contributions over to us and we will be able to post them between editions.  Recent Photo Albums include photographs from the rarely visited Osireion at Abydos and the beautiful colours of Medinet Habu at Luxor.  Recent articles include a review of the SACE Beginner and Intermediate Hieroglyphs course at Liverpool University, Kate Phizackerly’s review of The Life and Secrets of Almina Carnarvon by William Cross (The Carnarvon Years), Brian Alm’s review of Religion and Ritual in Ancient Egypt by Emily Teeter, and an overview of the Osireion by Andrea Byrnes.
